Here we are in the highest mountains of northern Germany which have always held a treasure of myths, rumours and legends.
Although Harz was cultivated a long time ago, for more than 1,000 years silver, iron and copper have been mined here; its inhabitants have never tamed it. Dense forests with a variety of trees, mountain firs and ancient forests, deep valleys, streams and mountain lakes, numerous moors, jagged and bizarre cliffs as well as the long winter give it an ancient and mystical atmosphere.
At the edge of this dream-like nature park lies Wernigerode, the “colourful city of Harz”. In the old town, with its winding alleys, there are innumerable, historical half-timbered buildings with impressive, colourfully painted wood carvings. Especially impressive examples are the town hall and the marketplace. Here, you can browse through galleries and little boutiques or enjoy the dreamy scenery over a latte macchiato.
But if you’d rather conquer the impressive hinterland, you can cross-country ski, jog, hike, climb, mountain bike or drive a convertible. You can find pure nature in Harz National Park centred around Brocken mountain.
The myths of Harz are revealed for everyone in their own unique way.
And when will you discover your Harz?
