The almost one thousand year old “colourful city in Harz” (Hermann Loens, 1970) has a wealth of well preserved art and cultural monuments.

In the traffic-free town centre, carefully restored half-timbered buildings from four centuries are found side-by-side. The focal point is the marketplace with the town hall, which was mentioned back in 1277 as the so-called “spelhus”.

Discover the “city’s smallest house”, the “skewed house” or the “crooked house”, just to mention a few of the architectural monuments. Above the city lies the picturesque castle which has also been called the “Neuschwanstein of Harz”.

Wernigerode is the starting point of the Harz narrow-gauge railway. From there, you can travel with the historical steam trains of the cross-country Harz train up to Brocken mountain (1,142 metres) or to Nordhausen. On the trip, allow yourself to be mesmerized by the nature and the animal world.

A summary of some of the most important sights:

  • Famous old town with a large marketplace
  • Town Hall, unique medieval, half-timbered, work of art
  • Upper parish church corner, behind the town hall: one of the most beautiful houses in the town
  • Former mill pond: “crooked house”, because the water from the mill has partially washed away the foundation walls of the house
  • The smallest house in the city: after all, 4.2 metres long by 2.95 metres wide still gives you living space of 8 square metres
  • Breite Straße, House No. 72: unique wooden architecture in Europe, Baroque architectural treasure with many decorations
  • Grandly situated above the town, the picturesque feudal castle, the "Neuschwanstein of Harz"

Highly Recommended: have a guided tour with the "night-watchman" - stroll through narrow lanes while listening stories about the Middle-Ages in Wernigerode.
