"Village on the mountain" sounds a little pompous, but the old Slavic word “Gora” is actually translated as mountain.
And the Slavs weren’t entirely wrong with this name, because the path from the train station to the town really does go up a steep hill. The word “Nordperd” also comes from Slavic and is the northern point of the Mönchgut peninsula, where Göhren is located.
The special feature of Göhren is undoubtedly the picturesque sandy beach, which is a total of 7 km long and which surrounds the town on two sides. Relax on the fine sandy north beach or the quiet south beach. Promenade on the new "Amber Promenade", which was an outpost of the IGA in 2003. The historic music and spa pavilion has been wonderfully reconstructed and the gardens have been caringly planted.
The white villas of the town centre with their small shops are very inviting for taking a stroll. In the town, there are four museums – the museum ship, the Rookhus, the local history museum, and the great Museumshof. Here, you can rediscover the history of Mönchgut for yourself.
And, would you like to discover one of Rügen’s special features. The famous ‘Rasenden Roland’ stops in Göhren. It is our island’s narrow-gauge railway. With it, you can travel through Sellin and Binz to Putbus. Enjoy a romantic trip right through the middle of multifaceted Rügen.
