Is Arenas means “the sands” – but there is more to it than that. Not that we were reluctant to mention our over four kilometres of beach – between us, it is marvellous.
Neither would we keep the unspoilt nature from you with its pines, eucalyptus trees, and myrtle bushes. But the Sinis peninsula, about 20km from the provincial capital Oristano, offers even more attractions: rugged coastlines, lagoons, wooded mountains, and ancient sites.
Oristano is the capital of the smallest Sardinian province – which means that things don’t get too glamorous or hectic around here. Between beautiful palazzi and the towers of the 11th century city walls, Oristano’s old town is perfect for strolling, shopping, or drinking espresso. In the evening, meet up on the Piazza Eleonora – at the monument to Sardinian national heroine Eleonora d’Arborea, who passed laws protecting human rights as far back as 1392.
And of course, in Oristano you have to try a “Vernaccia di Oristano”, one of the great wines of Sardinia that attunes your senses to the charms of this island...
