Culinary kicks from next door

Fresh and tempting: Whether it’s vegetables, fruit or wine, the province of Oristano is bountiful.

When artichokes grow in the neighbourhood and the best fish are caught just around the corner, then you can imagine the cuisine that is waiting for you. Naturally fresh ingredients and creative cooking are combined in the Travel Charme Hotel Is Arenas’ light Mediterranean cuisine with Sardinian touches.

Each day starts well – with a breakfast buffet that meets the highest international standards. Early golfers or late sleepers won’t be disappointedeither. A day’s fitting conclusion is an evening in the restaurant oron the terrace under starry skies – with à la carte indulgences, selected wines from the island or from the Italian mainland.

Even the snacks served in the restaurant, on the terrace, and at the beach club to keep you going during the day are creative and delicious. Oh and don’t forget the ice-cream specialties, the cakes and sweet treats like torrone sardu, Sardinian almond nougat, espresso, and cappuccino.

Cucina della Sardegna: Phoenician, Catalan, Pisan and Genoese influences can be found in Sardinian cuisine. The sea and its fish, themountains and their wild boar, goats and sheep – these two roots givethe particular Mediterranean cuisine of Sardinia its flavour.

Sardinian specialities: You must try this!

Sea and lagoons contribute fresh seafood.

Sardinian olive oil: a delicacy.
Sardinian olive oil: a delicacy.

Vernaccia di Oristano – the most famous of Sardinian wines. The amber hues of this 16% alcohol, sherry-like wine evoke almond blossoms; it has a velvety aroma with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Best served slightly chilled as an aperitif or for dessert.

Pane carasau – a paper-thin, crispy flat bread baked on a wide, smouldering chestnut board. With olive oil and salt it is ideal as a snack or served with wine.

Bottarga – made from mullet roe that has been dried, pressed and preserved. Bottarga makes a wonderful antipasto, cut up like carpaccio and drizzled with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Artichokes – cultivated in the area around Oristano, they’re a delicacy, fresh or pickled.

Pecorino Sardo – the quality of this Sardinian cheese comes from the unspoilt nature: sheeps and goats graze wild, their milk takes on the aroma of the herbs and grasses of the Mediterranean macchia.

Malloreddus – also known as Sardinian gnocchi. Noodles made from durum wheat with dried spinach or dried tomatoes.

Porcheddu – Sardinian suckling pig, enjoyed ideally at a big picnic with Sardinian friends (and Sardinian wine) in the great outdoors.
