Holidays on the island of Rügen

Rügen is Germany’s largest island, and is actually an archipelago in itself, with a main island, several peninsulas and a scattering of islets. It is regarded as the country’s most beautiful island too, with its chalk cliffs gleaming over the wide blue expanses of the Baltic. Beaches lined with windswept pines are interspersed with promenades edged with rows of ornamental white villas, like strands of pearls.

The flower-strewn meadows of spring, autumn’s golden forests, beaches transfigured with hoar frost in winter – this archipelago has charms aplenty no matter what the season. Rügen is an island of contrasts, and more diversity than a first glance would suggest.
