Hiking and walking
On your holiday at our 4-star superior hotel in Werfenweng, you’ll be based at the ideal starting point for long walks, leisurely circular hikes or challenging mountain tours in an impressive Alpine landscape. There is a wide range of hiking trails in the Salzburger Land region, with something to suit everyone! On approx. 85 km of hiking trails, you can enjoy an active break from everyday life, just breathing deeply and enjoying some pristine natural landscapes. One particularly beautiful hike is the ‘IKARUS Höhenrundwanderweg’, a high-altitude circular trail, which you can explore with the whole family thanks to its wheelchair and pushchair access. Take the IKARUS cable car up to the summit of the Bischling and then follow the panoramic trail around the summit cross, which provides breathtaking views of 40 peaks in the surrounding area.
Werfenweng’s ‘Spazierhimmel’ is, as its name suggests, total heaven for walking fans. On 12 km of walking trails, you can stroll along rows of trees and idyllic streams to the most beautiful vantage points on the sunny mountain plateau. From morning and evening walks to moonlight and family strolls, these comfortable walking trails are perfect for any time of day. Our secret tip: the two walking routes through the Wengerwinkel and through the mountain pastures above Werfenweng are among Austria’s most beautiful hiking trails.

on the ‘Fauna-Flora’ circular hike along the ‘Almlehrpfad’ (‘Alpine nature trail’), you’ll learn lots of valuable information about the region’s diverse natural world and the history of Alpine farming. samo Card holders can attend a free guided tour lasting approx. five hours and starting at 9:30 am every Wednesday; sign up via the tourist information office on +43 (0) 6466/42 00.
Swimming in Werfenweng
Summer holidays and swimming, they simply belong together. And it’s no different at Bergresort Werfenweng in Salzburger Land. At the Wengsee lake amusement park, you can swim your lengths in the crystal-clear waters of the mountain lake and then relax in the heart of a natural landscape.
Tip for samo Card holders: admission to the Wengsee lake amusement park is free for samo guests.
You can also swim outdoors all year round in the hotel’s own wellness area: enjoy a view of the impressive Tennen Mountains as you swim in the 28°C sports pool and simply relax in the outdoor panorama hot tub. And on rainy days, you can unwind in the indoor relaxation pool.
Climbing in Werfenweng will take you to new heights. The Tennen Mountains have a lot to offer for climbers, especially beginners. At the Werfener Hütte, for example, you’ll find a climbing facility with 10 routes at various levels of difficulty, making it an ideal Alpine training area for trying out the sport or ‘warming up’. In the Werfener Hütte area, there is also a range of routes for beginners, along with challenges for seasoned climbers. The surrounding area also has a lot to offer for avid climbers, as the Salzburger Land region is home to many varied climbs to conquer. And on rainy days, you can simply go to the Werfen climbing centre!

Summer cable cars
From May to October, you can enjoy a comfortable ride on the summer cable cars up to the Bischling, high above Werfenweng and, with your Guest Card, you can even ride at discounted prices. At 1,850 m above sea level, you’ll find a unique view of more than 40 peaks, a stunning view of the Salzachtal valley and an impressive 360° panorama, which you can enjoy while hiking, mountain-biking or during a peaceful break. Horse-riding and horse-drawn carriage rides
You can also explore our ‘valley of soft mobility’ on horseback. The Oberegg riding stables, owned by the Steiger family, offer horse-riding experiences for all abilities: taster rides for children and beginners, riding lessons at the riding grounds and varied rides in pristine natural landscapes, along the water or on high-altitude trails. If you’d prefer a more leisurely approach, just take a seat in a horse-drawn carriage and enjoy a ride through the beauty of nature. Just sit back and enjoy!

Golf in the Salzburger Land
You also have access to the OPEN GOLF St. Johann Alpendorf facility, located in St. Johann in Pongau, not far from Bergresort Werfenweng. This facility consists of two 9-hole courses: the 9-hole tournament course and the 9-hole training course. With two different courses, this facility is perfect for golfers of all abilities. Beginners will feel more comfortable on the Orange Course, while club golfers will feel at home on the Blue Course. Skiing and snowboarding
Families and real winter-sports fans will love these 27 km of expertly groomed slopes. Enjoy exhilarating, fast-paced ski runs, weave your way leisurely down the mountain or blow off some steam at the snowboard park and at New School Skiing. The Werfenweng ski resort is small but beautiful and has something to suit everyone.
And you can hire all the gear you need at the resort’s own sports shop, ‘Sport Alpin’. You can also sign up for sports and activity courses. Lift tickets, half-day passes and afternoon passes can be purchased at discount prices directly at our hotel.

Enjoy a deluxe skiing experience
Ikarus gondola cable car – Skiing fun on 22 km of slopes
The majority of the Werfenweng ski resort is easy to reach from the centre via the free ski bus. Enjoy stunning ski runs at 1,830 to 1,000 m. With 17 km of red runs, 2 km of blue runs and 3 km of black runs, pure skiing fun is guaranteed. Snowboarders and freeskiers can blow off some steam in the fun park.
Dorfbahn Rosnerköpfl – ride the cable car straight to the resort
The new ‘Dorfbahn Rosnerköpfl’ cable car, it is now possible to reach the ski resort from right next to Bergresort Werfenweng – no need for a car or a bus. Just like summer, winter here also promises some brilliant panoramas.
New kids’ snowpark by the ‘Ikarus’ cable car
Eight themed routes, a chill-out area, a toboggan run and a sheltered conveyor lift spread across 8 ha in the Zaglau Arena in the main ski resort. Highlights: Parallel Race, Speed Race, Wave Run, Forest Run, Snake Run, Ninja Warrior Track, Fun Jungle Run, Graffiti Park, Graffiti Chillout Area.

Children’s ski school with a kids’ area measuring over 5,000 m², three children’s conveyor lifts, one children’s carousel, children’s lounge, lunchtime supervision, eight-seater gondola cable car as a ski-school lift, magic show and much more.
Cross-country skiing is one of the healthiest sports there is, as it exercises the whole body. The extensive trail network in Werfenweng provides plenty of options for both classic leisure skiers and ambitious skaters.

Cross-country skiing courses:
- Beginner’s courses: Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:30 am
- Advanced courses: Tuesdays at 1:30 pm and Wednesdays at 9:30 am
Cross-country skiing courses can be booked at reception. You can hire equipment at the hotel’s own sports shop.
Samo Card: Samo Card holders can hire equipment and use the skiing trails free of charge.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides
Get snuggled up in warm blankets, explore the snow-covered winter landscape and discover Werfenweng’s romantic side.
- EUR 75 for the small sleigh (one to five people)
- EUR 80 for the large sleigh
Your samo Card entitles you to one free sleigh ride. Rides start at Dorfplatz at 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Duration: approx. 1.5 hours with a short break.

The Spazierhimmel area – a walker’s paradise
Even in winter, the ‘Spazierhimmel’ (walker’s heaven) is easy to explore, with legendary views of Werfenweng and the Salzburger Land.

A range of winter hiking trails offering stunning panoramas that you won’t be forgetting in a hurry. Every Wednesday at 7:30 pm, you can hike through the winter landscape by torchlight, under the protection of hiking llamas. Once again, this experience is, of course, free for all samo Card holders.
Paragliding and ice-skating
Even in winter it's worth marvelling at Werfenweng from above and feeling "bird-free". Between December and Easter, the professionals offer tandem flights. All those who have acquired a taste for it can learn to fly themselves in Werfenweng. Take-off: The Bischling.
Winter also transforms Lake Wengsee into a real paradise. It is the perfect spot for ice-skaters to blow off some steam, either in the sunshine or under floodlights. And to warm yourself up, you can enjoy some tea and mulled wine right by the lake. samo Card holders can hire ice skates free of charge.
A range of toboggan runs makes for plenty of fun on two runners. Ride the cable cars up or hike through snow-covered forests. It’s definitely worth it for the sweeping descents from the top.

- The ‘Tennenblick’ toboggan run: Walking time: approx. 20 min.

From 13 June to 7 November 2020, the cable car runs from 10 am to 4 pm (closed on Tuesdays). On Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, the cable car also runs in the evenings from 7 pm to 10 pm. Extra ride times are possible, but they must be booked in advance. Please note: guests at our hotel can enjoy unlimited use of the Guest Card, but not for skiing. If you want to go up during the day for snow hiking or a similar activity, you can ride for free with the card. But if you’re going skiing, you will need to buy a ski pass.
