The Lauterbach marina is just 20 minutes away from Binz. From here, you can explore the island on your own from the water (boating license required). Whether you opt for the traditional Folkeboot or a small motorboat, or even a guided tour in a cutter, there's simply no better way to experience Rügen's maritime flair. For water sports enthusiasts, the sailing school in Jaich offers intensive courses during the summer, led by passionate sailors: traditional motorboat training, the ‘little’ ship master’s certificate for coastal waters, or the coastal sport boat licence.
Our route recommendation (approx. 4 hours):
Starting from the Lauterbach marina, keep the jetty on your starboard side and set sail for the open waters. The sea is very shallow in this area, so in moderate winds you are unlikely to encounter waves. Abeam the ship on the port side is the island of Vilm, where GDR grandees once spent their holidays. Today the island is a protected biosphere reserve and can only be visited with a professional guide. After about 1 hour, change course to 180° south. In clear weather, you can see the striking southern cliffs of Vilm; drop anchor in the bay and take a swimming break. Once you’ve passed the southern tip of the island, it’s time to put hard to starboard. Follow a general 340° course and Lauterbach harbour slowly comes back into view. After about 8 nautical miles, the harbour entrance lies abeam and you can tie up after a relaxing day of sailing. Afterwards you can either drive or take the ‘Racing Roland’ steam train back home to Kurhaus Binz.
