In the winter, the Kleinwalsertal is the ultimate destination for all winter-sports enthusiasts. Hit the slopes on your skis or snowboard for downhill thrills and the joy of perfect powder snow: our region is home to a wide variety of ski tours and plenty of free-riding options. Those who prefer to enjoy the snow at a more leisurely pace can explore the snow-covered, wintry landscape on cross-country skis, with snowshoes or during a hike or toboggan ride.

Ski and snowboard on 130 km of slopes

The Oberstdorf/Kleinwalsertal ski resort is a mere 200 metres away from our hotel and offers boundless delight for winter-sports enthusiasts. It boasts 130 kilometres of slopes for any level, from blue beginner runs to black expert runs, enjoyable family slopes to deep-snow hills. The ‘Crystal Family' resort combines three snow fun parks for action-packed fun in the mountains. You can also hit the ski slopes after dark on two nights of the week, when the floodlights are switched on.

Experience the mountain at night and admire the marvellous views of the illuminated valley. Night-time skiing takes place every Wednesday at the Kesslerlift cable car station in Riezlern and every Thursday at the Hubertuslift cable car station in Hirschegg, right next to the Ifen Hotel.

Cross-country skiing, snowshoe walks and winter hikes

Enjoy a leisurely cross-country ski trip away from the hustle and bustle of the slopes.

Three trails with a total length of 50 km await guests in the Kleinwalsertal free of charge. Cross-country trails for beginners and slopes on which your vitality is measured according to your heart rate. You can book cross-country skiing classes and rent equipment locally.

Snowshoe walks and winter hikes

More than 50 kilometres of winter hiking trails await you in the idyllic Kleinwalsertal region. Explore the unspoilt, snow-covered landscapes of our valley during extensive winter hikes or brief excursions with your children. Winter hikers are welcome to use the lifts. Special rates are available for passengers without gear.

Tobogganing

The Kleinwalsertal offers endless tobogganing fun for all the family. Six specially prepared toboggan runs and two dedicated tobogganists’ lifts promise lots of laughs all day long. Have a go at our winter fun sports. Hop on a snow bike, ski fox or snow scooter to experience winter sports with a twist!

Ski touring

There are two ways to get to the summit. Most choose the comfortable option: a lift or gondola. Others prefer to break a sweat and earn themselves the view from the top. Climb up the slopes step by step as the mountains around you gradually reveal themselves in all their glory. After the taxing ascent, reward yourself by zipping back down into the valley through the deep snow. Take note of weather and avalanche forecasts, and make sure to take the right equipment (including avalanche gear)!

Free-riding

Powder snow well into April? Absolutely: the ‘secret’ free-riding world of the Kleinwalsertal’s tributary valleys makes it possible. You had better ride with a guide: don't underestimate free-riding. Only the professional guides of the mountain and ski schools know the region and its conditions perfectly. Never set out without avalanche gear. You can book guides and free-riding courses at our reception desk.

Summer activities in the Kleinwalsertal

Trail runners and paragliders get to enjoy their hobby to their heart's content, too.

Hiking

Our five-star hotel is nestled in the Alpine landscapes of the Kleinwalsertal, a paradise for hikers wishing to explore the Vorarlberg region. Look forward to a versatile network of hiking paths that spans more than 150 kilometres and offers leisurely walks, stunning Alpine trails and taxing hikes to the summit of the Hoher Ifen and other mountains. We know how to make hikers’ hearts sing! Explore the mountain landscapes surrounding the Ifen Hotel at an optimal altitude between 1,000 and 2,536 metres – either on your own or as part of a guided tour, that is offered by our mountain guide Stefan several days a week (a general hike or a themed tour of the area).

Take in splendid views, experience nature, forget your everyday worries and take a deep breath of our crystal-clear air, then retreat to a rustic mountain inn for refreshments. Ask our staff at the Ifen Hotel for individual recommendations.

By the way: the Kleinwalsertal is one of the only Alpine valleys where you can explore two countries in one hike. Thanks to its unique location on the Austrian-German border, crossing from one side to the other is straightforward.
